Important information about opening an account online

Opening your account

Please read our General Investment Conditions and the specific account's Terms and Conditions. Only once you fully understand how the account works should you click the "I Agree" button below to access the application form. We recommend that you print a copy of the terms and conditions for your records and keep them in a safe place.

To open an account online you will need to send in the following:

  • A completed and signed application form (dated with the date the account was opened online); and
  • A deposit for your investment (a personal cheque is preferred).
  • If the application is for an ISA and you wish to transfer all or part of your existing ISA from another ISA provider, you will need to complete the Cash ISA Transfer Request Form in addition to the Cash ISA Application Form.** PDF document Download a Cash ISA Transter Request Form

Online application form

Although your chosen account will be displayed during the application process, when you print the application form it will show “Online Saver”. You can be assured that your chosen product has been processed and this can be verified in ‘Your Account View’.

Verifying your identity

Under the Money Laundering Regulations and Financial Services Authority rules, we are required to verify both the name, address and date of birth of investors. To do this, we will ordinarily use an electronic verification system.

For online applications, you may also need to supply a certified copy of a full UK photo driving licence or a valid UK or EU passport, or an original utility bill which is less than 3 months old (not a mobile phone bill). For details of other forms of acceptable identification, please see the “Application” screen when you proceed to open the account.

Email confirmation:

  1. you will receive an automatic email that refers to our standard Online Savings account with an opening minimum balance of £100.00. This may not be applicable to the account you are opening. Please refer to the terms and conditions of your chosen account for confirmation of the minimum opening balance.
  2. The email specifies acceptable identification to send to us with your application and cheque. If, however, you are an existing member of the Society with an account that has been transacted upon in the last 3 years, further identification is not required. If your account has not been active in the last 3 years further identification may be requested.

Interest payment options

All our accounts offer various interest options. Please write on the application form next to your bank details one of the following:

Please add interest to my/our account annually

OR

Please pay interest to my existing account with the Society – Quote account number.

OR

Please pay the annual interest to my bank as quoted.

Please note – for accounts with monthly interest, the interest must be paid to your bank or another account with the Society.

** Please note HM Revenue & Customs guidelines state that the ISA provider has up to 30 days to complete the transfer.

Leeds Building Society is a member of the Building Societies' Association. The Society is a participant in the Financial Services Compensation Scheme established under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000. Payments under the Scheme are limited to a maximum of £50,000 or €50,000 (whichever figure is higher on the day of default) of an investor's total shares and/or deposits in a society. Most investors are covered, including individuals and small firms. A small number of categories of shares and deposits are not covered, for example deferred shares - permanent interest bearing shares. Although most shares and deposits are denominated in sterling, all other currencies are covered. Further details are available on request from the Society.

The Society is covered by the Financial Ombudsman Service. We may monitor and/or record your telephone conversation with the Society to ensure consistent service levels (including staff training). The Society's main business is the provision of savings products, mortgages and general insurance. The Society offers some investment products that may be operated through branches and by post and certain products which can be operated by post only.
