Zoe Hood - Community Hero 2009
Zoe Hood, who manages the Society's Brecon Branch in Wales, won the Leeds Building Society 2009 Community Hero award, which recognises a member of staff who has made a real difference to a charity or their local community - the people who need it most. The winner is selected from all the nominations received by the Community Heroes Committee and, together with the Award, receives a cheque for £500 for their chosen charity, to support their outstanding effort.
Zoe has spent the last few years raising money for charity, but has really excelled in the last 12 months.
In April, Zoe took part in the London Marathon. Not only did she complete this, it was made more difficult as she was attached to 29 other runners as they achieved a Guinness World Record for the "most linked". With the help of the local community they raised £37,000 for Help the Hospices, £3,000 of this Zoe raised herself.
Her dedication to helping others also sees her volunteering with the local athletics team. She gives up her own time each week to coach the team. Zoe has managed to win great support from the children who admire what she does and is a worthy recipient of the Community Hero Award.
